the chess queen and king are bosses and summon then the way to beat the boss is to check mate the king with on of his own pieces you get and chess staff that summons a random chess piece or the chess dash killing chess pieces

Animate the enemies in a way that looks similar to the player. Give them a single eye and float like the player. You could even add armor for some of them and such. If you do armor, I'd implement it in a way that you have to knock it off before doing damage to the enemy. That way you could also implement temporary armor for thenplayer in a similar fashion.
